This Coastal Barrier Resources System (CBRS) data set, produced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), is intended to supplement another data set entitled “John H. Chafee Coastal Barrier Resources System Approximate Polygons” which contains areas designated as undeveloped coastal barriers in accordance with the Coastal Barrier Resources Act (CBRA) , as amended, 16 U.S.C. 3501 et seq.. For more information see the metadata for the “John H. Chafee Coastal Barrier Resources System Approximate Polygons” The metadata is available at http://www.fws.gov/cbra.
This CBRS Buffer Zone data set is intended to be paired with the “John H. Chafee Coastal Barrier Resources System Approximate Polygons” in order to illustrate the minimum horizontal accuracy of the boundary of each CBRS polygon. GIS users can place this layer on top of the CBRS polygons and an orthoimage in order to inspect areas that are within or in close proximity to the CBRS. Properties or structures that fall partially or entirely within the buffer area may be within the CBRS and an official determination from the Service is recommended.
For an official determination of whether or not a particular property or structure is located within the CBRS, please follow the procedures found at http://www.fws.gov/cbra. For any questions regarding the CBRS, please email CBRA@fws.gov.
This data set is for informational purposes only and is not said to be authoritative. The Service is not responsible for any misuse or misinterpretation of this digital data set, including use of the data to determine eligibility for federal financial assistance such as federal flood insurance. CBRS maps are either enacted by Congress or adopted administratively by the Secretary of the Interior (Secretary), and are maintained by the Service. Copies of the official CBRS maps are available for viewing at the Service’s Headquarters office and are also available to view or download at http://www.fws.gov/cbra/maps. CBRS boundary data viewed using the CBRS Mapper at http://www.fws.gov/cbra/Maps/Mapper.html or the “John H. Chafee Coastal Barrier Resources System Approximate Polygons” shapefile are subject to misrepresentations beyond the Service’s control, including misalignments of the boundaries with third party base layers and misprojections of spatial data. The official CBRS map is the controlling document and should be consulted for all official determinations.
<purpose>This data set was created to illustrate the two tiers of minimum horizontal accuracy of the “John H. Chafee Coastal Barrier Resources System Approximate Polygons”. Users are advised to contact the Service for an official determination as to whether a particular property or structure that falls either partially or completely within the “CBRS Buffer Zone” is located “in” or “out” of the CBRS.</purpose>

<complete>This buffer polygon data set has been checked to ensure that all CBRS boundaries over land are covered by the appropriate width buffer based on the CBRS boundary’s horizontal accuracy tier. The seaward side of a CBRS unit is generally defined by either the 20 foot or the 30 foot bathymetric contour (depending on the location of the unit) and is usually unmapped. Because of this, seaward boundaries that are based on the location of a bathymetric contour are not covered by a buffer polygon in this data set.
