<purpose>The purpose of the dikes dataset is to provide the extent and location of dikes within the study area, since these are an important factor in controlling water flow to coastal wetlands. Hydrologic connection between Lake Huron and coastal land areas are an important part of restoring coastal wetlands.</purpose>
<supplinf>The purpose for releasing version 2.0 of these datasets is that they were created with more recent and more accurate input data. For changes between versions 1.0 and 2.0, please see the Release History text file.</supplinf>

Data underwent quality control (QC) procedures in which Subject Matter Experts and those familiar with the study area examined the data output, comparing the proposed dike locations to aerial imagery, flowline data, and the Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Dikes that appeared to be false positives were deleted from the dataset . </attraccr>

<logic>The attribute values were reviewed, and spatial data was visually inspected to verify the that the data values and their locations accurately describe the purpose of the data.</logic>
<complete>This dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. This dataset provides coverage for the entire Saginaw Bay Restoration Assessment study area. If the elevation difference was below a certain threshold, the area was not considered a dike. However, if the difference in elevation between two points was significantly high, then the area was marked as a dike. Areas contiguous with each other were considered part of the same dike. </complete>

The review consisted of comparing the spatial data to its input datasets and to underlying GIS basemaps. <procdesc>With ArcGIS Pro 3.0.3, a slope raster was created from the SBRA 10 meter DEM using the "Slope" tool (Output measurement = Degree and Method = Planar). Areas where the slopes were greater than 12 degrees were extracted with the "Extract by Attributes" tool. Then the extracted slope raster was converted to a polygon layer with the "Raster to Polygon" tool (Simplify polygons = True, CRS = UTM 17N).</procdesc>

<procdesc>Next, QA/QC was performed on the spatial data. The dikes polygon layer was examined to find instances of NHD flowlines intersecting with the dike polygons. In the case of an intersection, dike features were split along the flowlines and the smaller section of the dike feature was removed. If a culvert was present at an intersection between dikes and flowlines, the dike feature was left in tact. After entire dataset was inspected and edited in this manner, the polygon layer was clipped to the SBRA study area and saved as a shapefile.</procdesc>
